When installing or upgrading to Windows 8, VMware Workstation 8 does not work anymore. This is indicated in the Windows 8 Compatibility Wizard. A repair of the installation does not fix this. The following error occurs when stating a virtual machine:
To get VMware Workstation up and running again the Virtual Machine’s VMX file needs to be edited.
Open the VM’s VMX file | ![]() |
Change vmci0.present = “TRUE” to vmci0.present = “FALSE” | ![]() to ![]() |
Save the VM’s VMX file. |
Now the Virtual Machine can be started. There is no need to re-open it in VMware Workstation.
