Getting VMware Workstation 8 to work in Windows 8 RTM

Posted on Posted in Microsoft General, VMWare

When installing or upgrading to Windows 8, VMware Workstation 8 does not work anymore. This is indicated in the Windows 8 Compatibility Wizard. A repair of the installation does not fix this. The following error occurs when stating a virtual machine:

SNAGHTMLcbf3e

To get VMware Workstation  up and running again the Virtual Machine’s VMX file needs to be edited.

Open the VM’s VMX file SNAGHTMLd2c12
Change vmci0.present = “TRUE” to vmci0.present = “FALSE” image
toimage
Save the VM’s VMX file.

Now the Virtual Machine can be started. There is no need to re-open it in VMware Workstation.
